Ah....in versions of ArchiCAD before V10, where plotmaker was a stand alone program, plt files would not import accept as gibberish if you could get ArchiCAD to open the .plt at all.

Since we no longer use plotmaker, I never thought to try ArchiCAD. In doing so, it appears that Brad's suggestion really works!

ArchiCAD is indeed an interesting graphic utility as well as a CAD/BIM design program.
This is quite a challenge to model in ArchiCAD. Does it really need to be exactly that train? There are lots of models (for pay or free) that you can import as objects. The best results are generally with 3DS format.
Something is amiss in your Work Environment. If you had exported your customized environment (as you should), then re-import it and apply it. But, just try one of the standard WE's to see if your TW menu returns properly.

Cheers,

 I have version 5.4.1 Rev2 dating back to 2005.

It opens .plt files just fine; Including ones generated the other day.

Edit; just checked the page link above and down the page is;

"HP-GL/2 Vector images. This format is normally used from plotters."

End edit....

Every now and then I get a plt instead of a pdf from a contractor and this program opens them up and displays the graphics just like a pdf.

It's a real 'can-opener!'

I just copied this to the Tips forum ... but then followed the link and do not see PLT as a supported format:

http://www.lemkesoft.com/content/143/import-and-export-formats.html

Could you verify if the current version allows for the conversion?

Thanks,
If you pay the shareware fee (highly recommended) you can also batch process files. Graphic Converter is perhaps the greatest piece of shareware ever.

Open the .plt file with 'GraphicConverter.' It's been bundled in with other Apple operating software for several years.

If not bundled; it can be located here: http://www.lemkesoft.com/

Open the file, then print as usual, using the 'save as PDF' feature.

I use this every now and then for HP files or other plot files for converting them to PDFs.

Hope this helps.

 Dear Krippahl,

Quote:

Albeit some the-sky-is-falling alleged Portuguese architects that have been posting here, the DWF format is only asked on some towns.

By some towns you mean Lisbon (amongst others), which is only the largest city in Portugal and the third in the iberian peninsula... therefore a huge market for architects (even if it is small for GS).

Quote:

Not wanting to excuse GS for not having provided a quick solution

But by accepting this workaround you're doing so. The only reason we post here is to let know GS that they have to improve ArchiCAD. Otherwise it seems that everything is fine.

Quote:

... Windows is a must if you are serious about your work (there are so many programs that only run on windows, even with ArchiCAD)...

Being a Mac user for almost 20 years now i never felt the need to use windows (besides games and some other not so interesting CAD software).

Quote:

Not a major investment...

I would have to disagree, windows doesn't come for free and besides using it for DWF conversion purposes, it would be pointless.

Also i would suggest you read those municipalities DWF requirements... probably you would need to add that other CAD software (which by the way is ridiculously expensive).
The situation in Portugal is particularly worrying. It seems that it is easily fixed since DWF is an open and documented standard, but it isn't clear yet if GS is taking this seriously.

Albeit some the-sky-is-falling alleged Portuguese architects that have been posting here, the DWF format is only asked on some towns.

Not wanting to excuse GS for not having provided a quick solution (I know they are working on it, but we are after all a small market), the solution is quite simple: Bootcamp, Windows, DWF converter.

Bootcamp is free, Windows is a must if you are serious about your work (there are so many programs that only run on windows, even with ArchiCAD), and the DWF is also free.

Not a major investment, and certainly not in the same league as demanding Revit models. That would, at the present state of the art, simply trash ArchiCAD.
You better not visit some of the recent threads posted in the "BIM Experts" Group on LinkedIn. There are a few Revit users spouting their BIM ignorance. It is actually somewhat amusing.

Massive degree of misinformation and ignorance regarding ArchiCAD and BIM workflows in that thread (for example someone thinking that completely de-linked 2D drawings and elevations with no connection whatsoever to the original 3D model, still qualifies as a BIM workflow or process).

Years ago I would have felt compelled to jump in and correct those misconceptions. Nowadays, not so much.
Something about willful ignorance is immensely off-putting.

A lot of valid points were raised, but for the most part, it's the old pattern of someone picked up ArchiCAD (or was forced to use with without proper or sufficient training), didn't or couldn't bother learning to use it correctly and with a sufficiently organized workflow; struggled with it, and consequently concluded that it's a horrible program to use. (why someone would even want to use a program like ArchiCAD to model "pillows" and "cushions" with, simply boggles the mind - or why it's even necessary to document objects like those in a CD set)

The US Army Corps of Engineers is in the process of switching from requiring Microstation to the open COBIE standards. These are strongly favorable to IFC and seem to be very committed to open standards.

The Coast Guard has been using ArchiCAD for quite some time.

The GSA has selected five BIM teams including a strong representation of ArchiCAD users.

Texas may be an anomaly (it usually is), but of course it is a major state and the Revit requirement sets a bad example.

It is clear though that GS really needs to address the issue of meeting official submittal requirements or even devoted users may be forced to abandon the program if they can't submit their designs for approval.

The situation in Portugal is particularly worrying. It seems that it is easily fixed since DWF is an open and documented standard, but it isn't clear yet if GS is taking this seriously.

The GSA has always seemingly been ArchiCAD/IFC friendly and definitely more software neutral if not leaning towards open standards. Ditto the Military.

I think Autodesk realize this, as well as the dead-end of trying to make the US-GSA and by default the US government, a major and exclusive Autodesk client (Conflicts of interest, constitutional regulations, lobbying and all that), and thus their marketing strategy seems to be aimed at the States and at state-level, and specifically the larger States in making them believe and thus adopt Autodesk products and 'BIM' principles as Industry defaults.

I think it begins to become a problem when some of the other larger states (California, Florida, NY, Mass. etc) begin adopting Autodesk and Revit as exclusive BIM submission formats for state government projects, first and then for other projects in general. Other states are sure to follow.

I'm not sure what leverage Graphisoft has, or would have in terms of reversing or arresting this trend - or what Will, for that matter.

Beyond putting out a better (more superior) product and having a more concerted marketing effort and certainly more pronounced presence in the North American AEC scene, beyond free licenses for students.

i believe gsa will make modeling way easy and correct the basic errors that occur when trying to make 'out of the box architecture'.revit modeling is quite sensible but slow and time consuming this are areas are where gsa can match up(better rendering engine---cinema4d engine in gsa)
my suggestion look at wat ur competitors are doing and review what makes architecture right.av no fear in copying but make it worth it.
i know the programe has great potential, cos i have won competitions where revit programs where used.
but i am still tryn my hands on revit and features......
