If you want elements to distribute the function I need the most is that the computer automatically figures out how much distance between their bounding boxes is - and then aligns the objects accordingly.

The distribution in Archicad however works different.
Instead Archicad takes the middle axis of the element and distributes those (so the distance between the axis are the same, but different between the elements themself - I want it the other way around).

It would be great to have the option to choose one of these methods.

Sure! I've updated the wish with a screenshot which makes it obvious how Archicad's method is rather suboptimal in some cases.

OK, this is not what I thought, so it is good that you attached that screenshot.
So you basically distribute the elements between the two farthest elements of the selection so the gaps between the elements will be the same regardless of variation on the widths of elements in the selection.
